Bathtub Refinishing & Reglazing in Denver, Colorado
Professional bathtub resurfacing, recoating & restoration. Save 75% vs replacement. Ready to use in 24-48 hours.
A damaged or worn-out bathtub can be more than just an eyesore—it can decrease bathroom value, comfort, and functionality. At Fresh Look Refinishing, we specialize in providing high-quality bathtub refinishing (also called bathtub reglazing, resurfacing, or recoating) throughout Denver, Colorado, and surrounding areas. With over 13 years of experience, we are Denver's #2 most-reviewed refinishing specialist, restoring bathtubs using commercial-grade chemical bonding coatings—not consumer-grade paint.
Whether your tub is chipped, cracked, stained, yellowed, or simply outdated, our refinishing process breathes new life into your bathroom, offering a gleaming, durable, like-new bathtub for 10-15 years to come—at a fraction of replacement cost.
What Is Bathtub Refinishing?
Bathtub refinishing is NOT painting. It's a multi-step chemical bonding process that permanently restores a worn bathtub surface to factory-new condition.
The Chemistry Behind Professional Refinishing
Bathtub refinishing works through molecular adhesion, not surface coating. Here's how it differs from DIY kits and consumer paint:
Commercial-Grade Bonding Process
Our process begins with an acid etch that microscopically roughens the existing surface, creating a mechanical lock for the new coating. We then apply a high-solids epoxy primer (not acrylic primer) that chemically bonds—bonds at the molecular level—to the substrate. Finally, we spray 2-3 coats of acrylic urethane topcoat using HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) equipment. This multi-layer system creates a finish that doesn't peel, flake, or chip under normal use.
Why this matters: Consumer kits use thin acrylic paint applied over inadequate surface prep. Professional refinishing uses primers and topcoats with high solids content (80%+ vs 30-40% in consumer paint), meaning more actual coating material per coat, better adhesion, and superior durability.
Cure Time vs. Use Time
Our refinishing is ready for light use (rinsing, shower) within 24 hours. Full cure (where the coating reaches maximum hardness) takes 30 days, but you can bathe normally after 48 hours. This is because the coating continues to harden as moisture escapes and cross-linking completes.
Not Paint, Not Plating
Bathtub refinishing is distinct from:
- Painting: Paint sits on the surface. Refinishing coatings chemically bond to the substrate.
- Electroplating: Plating applies a new metallic layer through electrical current—expensive, limited to certain materials, and rarely used for consumer tubs.
- Liner installation: A plastic liner is glued over the existing tub. Refinishing restores the original tub.

Call (720) 295-0513Why Bathtub Refinishing Beats Replacement
An old, stained, or damaged bathtub can really bring down your bathroom's appearance and functionality. At the same time, who has the time and money these days for a $3,000–$8,000 bathroom remodel? Bathtub refinishing (reglazing, resurfacing, recoating—same process, different names) transforms your existing tub back to factory-new condition in one day at a fraction of replacement cost.
Yes, you can find a new tub for $150–$300. But consider the true cost: removal and disposal of your old tub, cutting out tile to access the tub flange and plumbing, removal or relocation of old plumbing, possible plumbing modifications to fit the new tub, drywall patching and paint, tile replacement or repair. That adds up to $3,000–$8,000+ in labor and materials, plus a minimum of 1-2 weeks of bathroom downtime and massive disruption.
Professional Bathtub Refinishing
- $450–$650 typical — a fraction of replacement cost
- One day on site — no dumpster, no demolition, no drywall
- Use it in 24–48 hours — back to normal fast
- Lasts 10-15 years — with proper care and maintenance
- Written warranty — in plain English, covers defects
- Your existing plumbing stays — unchanged, intact, working
- Licensed, insured, bonded — protection for you and your home
Full Bathtub Replacement
- $3,000–$8,000+ for bathtub, labor, and materials
- 1–2 weeks of demo, plumbing, tile, drywall, finish work
- Bathroom out of service for the entire project
- Surrounding tile and drywall almost always need repair
- Hidden costs often discovered during demo (water damage, mold, rot)
- Permits and inspections required in many cases
- Debris and noise throughout your home for weeks

Get a Free EstimateOur Detailed 5-Step Bathtub Refinishing Process
We don't just paint over dirt. We chemically bond the new surface to the existing substrate for a finish that never peels, chips, or flakes under normal use.
Professional bathtub refinishing is precision work. Each step builds on the last. Skip one, and the entire finish fails. Here's exactly what happens on the day we refinish your tub:
- 1
Deep Inspection & Cleaning
We thoroughly inspect your tub to identify all chips, cracks, stains, and areas requiring special attention. We use commercial-grade alkaline cleaners to remove soap scum, oils, waxes, and mineral deposits. This isn't a quick rinse—we scrub every surface until the substrate is completely clean. Any remaining residue prevents bonding.
Time: 30–60 minutes, depending on tub condition.
- 2
Damage Repair & Acid Etch
Chips and small cracks are filled with a specialized polyester bonding compound. Larger structural cracks may require reinforcement or—if too severe—we'll recommend replacement. Once repairs cure, the entire tub surface is acid-etched (using dilute muriatic acid). This microscopically roughens the surface, creating mechanical hooks that the primer will lock into. Without this acid etch, the new finish cannot achieve molecular adhesion.
Why this step matters: Porcelain and acrylic are glossy and non-porous—coatings won't stick without mechanical texture. The acid etch creates that texture.
Time: 45–90 minutes.
- 3
Bathroom Prep & Dust Control
The bathroom is sealed and ventilated. We remove items from the bathroom and cover everything that stays—toilet, fixtures, surrounding tile, flooring—with plastic or paper. We run a negative-pressure air scrubber throughout the process to capture spray dust before it settles. All HVAC vents are sealed. Doors are masked to prevent dust migration to other rooms.
Time: 30–45 minutes.
- 4
Primer Application
Once the tub is clean and dry (humidity is critical—too humid and the coating won't cure properly), we spray a tinted epoxy primer using an HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) spray gun powered by a 3-stage turbine compressor. This primer is high-solids (80%+), meaning it applies thick and bonds at the molecular level to the acid-etched substrate. The tint helps us see coverage and ensures even primer thickness. The primer cures for 2–4 hours before topcoat.
Why HVLP? HVLP equipment produces a fine, even atomization with minimal overspray and bounce-back, resulting in smooth coatings without runs or drips.
Time: 30–45 minutes application + 2–4 hours cure.
- 5
Topcoat Application & Cure
We apply 2–3 coats of acrylic urethane topcoat (the same HVLP system), allowing 1–2 hours between coats for flash-off. Acrylic urethane is the industry standard for bathtub refinishing—it's durable, UV-stable (won't yellow), and develops a hard, glossy finish. We typically apply 3 coats for maximum durability.
After topcoat application, the tub enters cure phase:
- 24 hours: Surface dry; light rinsing with cool water OK
- 48 hours: Safe for showers and normal bathing
- 7 days: Handle normal cleaning products
- 30 days: Fully cured; coating reaches maximum hardness and chemical resistance
Time: 60–90 minutes application + 24–36 hours to light use.
Full Project Timeline
On-site time: 4–6 hours on a single day (typically starts early morning).
Until use: 24–48 hours.
Until full cure: 30 days (during which the coating continues to harden and cross-link).

Bathtub Materials & Substrates We Restore
We refinish porcelain, cast iron, fiberglass, acrylic, steel, and specialty tubs. Each substrate requires slightly different prep and coating techniques. Here's what we handle and why the material matters:
Porcelain Over Cast Iron
The classic, durable tub found in older homes. Cast iron is heavy and holds heat well, but the porcelain coating chips easily. We repair chips with bonding compound, acid-etch the entire surface, and apply primer and topcoat. Result: factory-new porcelain finish that lasts 10-15 years. Most common in pre-1980 homes.
Porcelain Over Steel
Mid-century classic, lighter than cast iron, more prone to rust spots if the porcelain chips and exposes the steel. We identify rust, treat it, repair the porcelain, and refinish. The acrylic urethane topcoat prevents future rust by sealing the steel. Very restorable.
Fiberglass (FRP)
Most common in homes built 1980-2010. Fiberglass is non-porous, lightweight, and prone to crazing (fine cracks), staining, and gloss loss. We fill cracks, clean aggressively (fiberglass stains run deep), acid-etch, and refinish. Fiberglass is one of the best substrates for refinishing—the non-porous surface bonds excellently with our primers and topcoats.
Acrylic
Contemporary tubs (post-2000) made from acrylic resin. Acrylic yellows over time, especially in sunlit bathrooms. We refinish to bright white or custom colors. Acrylic can be softer than fiberglass and more prone to scratches, but it refinishes beautifully. We often add anti-slip texture to acrylic tubs for safety.
Clawfoot & Specialty Tubs
Vintage clawfoot, soaking tubs, vintage high-wall tubs, and custom shapes. We handle them all. Clawfoot tubs are typically porcelain over cast iron and refine beautifully. Jetted tubs require extra masking and careful ventilation to avoid water damage to jets, but we do them regularly.
Anti-Slip Textures
Worried about slipping after refinishing? We add a gritty anti-slip coating (similar to non-skid deck paint) to the bottom surface or entire tub. Anti-slip texture is applied during topcoat phase, creating safety without sacrificing the glossy finish elsewhere. Available on any refinish project.
Not sure what your tub is made of? Describe it or take a photo and call us. We'll identify the material and let you know if it's a good candidate for refinishing. Some materials (certain types of cultured marble or acrylic composites) may not be ideal, and we'll tell you straight.

Call (720) 295-0513Bathtub Refinishing Pricing
Standard bathtubs (porcelain, fiberglass, acrylic) typically cost $450–$650. Here's what affects the final price:
Factors That Affect Price
- Tub material & condition: A well-maintained porcelain tub is straightforward. A heavily stained or cracked fiberglass tub requires more repair work.
- Size: A standard 5-foot tub costs less than a 6-foot soaking tub or a shower-tub combo. We measure and quote accordingly.
- Damage: Minor chips and stains are factored into standard pricing. Large structural cracks or extensive rust may increase cost or may not be repairable.
- Color: White is standard. Custom colors (blue, pink, etc.) may add $50–$150 depending on the color and availability.
- Add-ons: Anti-slip texture adds $100–$150. Tub-and-tile combos run $750–$1,100.
- Location: Travel time within Denver metro is included. Remote areas (Evergreen, Black Hawk, etc.) may add a trip fee.
Transparent Pricing
Every quote is free, in writing, and honest. We don't surprise you with hidden fees on the day of service. If a project is more complex than expected (we discover structural damage during inspection), we call you with an updated quote before proceeding.
Value Proposition
A $500 refinish vs. a $5,000 replacement isn't just cheaper—it's better in almost every way. Same-day service, zero disruption, no demolition, no permits, and your tub stays exactly where it is. Even if you replace the tub tomorrow, refinishing buys you time and extends the life of your current tub.

Call (720) 295-0513How Long Does Bathtub Refinishing Last?
With proper care, professional bathtub refinishing lasts 10–15 years. Some of our customers' tubs have held up beautifully for 18+ years.
What Determines Lifespan
- Professional prep quality: Our multi-step prep (cleaning, acid etch, repair, dust control) ensures maximum adhesion. Poor prep = early failure. We don't cut corners.
- Coating grade: Commercial-grade primers and topcoats (which we use) far outlast consumer-grade acrylic paint. Our acrylic urethane topcoat is rated for 15+ years in normal conditions.
- Bathroom ventilation: Excess humidity can shorten lifespan. A well-ventilated bathroom extends it. Use an exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers.
- Maintenance & care: What you do after we leave matters.
Maintenance Guidelines for Maximum Lifespan
Week 1 (Critical)
- Use cool water only for the first 48 hours
- Avoid hot water, hot showers, and soaking until 48 hours have passed
- Don't use cleaning products for 7 days
Month 1 (Full Cure)
- After 7 days, you can use mild soap and water
- Avoid abrasive scrubbers and harsh chemical cleaners for the first 30 days
- The coating continues to harden; by day 30 it reaches maximum hardness
Ongoing Maintenance
- Use a soft sponge or cloth for cleaning, never abrasive pads or steel wool
- Use mild, non-abrasive cleaners (dish soap, bathroom cleaner). Avoid bleach, vinegar, and acidic cleaners that can damage the topcoat
- Ventilate during and after showers to prevent mold and excess humidity
- Dry the tub after heavy use to prevent water spots and mold growth
- Check for chips or cracks. Small chips are cosmetic; larger damage should be repaired
Refinishing Lifespan vs. Replacement Lifespan
Refinished tub: 10–15 years with care. At that point, you can refinish again or replace.
New acrylic tub: 10–15 years (similar lifespan). New cast iron: 20–30 years. Replacing a tub for one that lasts the same amount of time doesn't make financial sense when refinishing costs 90% less.
The economics: Refinish now for $500. Refinish again in 12 years for $500. Total cost over 24 years: $1,000. Replace now for $3,000–$8,000. Replace again in 15 years. Total cost: $6,000–$16,000. Refinishing wins every time.
Why DIY Bathtub Refinishing Kits Fail
DIY bathtub refinishing kits are tempting—$50–$150 for a kit vs. $500 professional service. But they fail in predictable ways. Here's why professional refinishing is worth the investment:
Inadequate Surface Prep
DIY: Kits provide a spray bottle of cleaner and maybe sandpaper. Home owners lack professional-grade equipment (pressure washers, acid etch materials) and don't do multi-step prep. Poor adhesion follows immediately.
Professional: We spend 1–2 hours on prep alone—deep clean, acid etch, repair—creating a surface that coatings bond to at the molecular level.
Poor Ventilation & Humidity Control
DIY: Most home bathrooms don't have adequate ventilation. Moisture gets trapped under the coating, causing peeling and failure within months.
Professional: We use industrial air scrubbers and negative-pressure ventilation. Temperature and humidity are monitored. Coatings cure properly.
Low-Grade Coatings
DIY: Consumer kits use cheap acrylic paint (30–40% solids). A single thin coat. No primer. Cheap materials = cheap results. Peeling within 6–12 months is typical.
Professional: We use commercial-grade epoxy primer (80%+ solids) + acrylic urethane topcoat (80%+ solids). 2–3 topcoats. Three times the material thickness. Lasts 10–15 years.
Wrong Equipment
DIY: Kits come with brush or cheap spray equipment. Results are uneven—visible brush strokes, runs, drips, orange peel texture.
Professional: We use HVLP spray equipment powered by 3-stage turbine compressors. Even atomization, smooth finish, no brush marks or runs.
Health & Safety Risks
DIY: Refinishing coatings have strong VOC (volatile organic compound) fumes. Without proper ventilation and respiratory protection, you're inhaling hazardous chemicals. The bathroom gets contaminated with overspray.
Professional: We ventilate aggressively and follow safety protocols. You're not exposed to fumes.
No Warranty
DIY: When it fails (and it will), you're out the kit cost and left with a worse-looking tub.
Professional: We provide a written warranty. If the finish fails due to our workmanship, we fix it.
When might DIY make sense? Honestly, not for bathtubs. DIY kits are marketed to homeowners who don't know better. If the cost is truly prohibitive, save up for professional service. A failed DIY attempt leaves you with an even worse tub and wastes your time.
Don't gamble with your bathroom. Professional refinishing is affordable and guaranteed.

Call (720) 295-0513Comprehensive Bathtub Refinishing FAQ
Durability & Lifespan
How long does bathtub refinishing last?
With proper care and maintenance, professional bathtub refinishing lasts 10–15 years. Some customers' tubs have held up for 18+ years. The lifespan depends on prep quality (we do thorough prep), coating grade (we use commercial-grade, not consumer paint), bathroom ventilation, and how you maintain it.
Compare this to a new bathtub, which typically lasts 10–15 years as well. At 1/10th the cost, refinishing is an easy choice.
What can shorten the lifespan of a refinish?
Poor ventilation (excess humidity), abrasive cleaning products, harsh chemicals (bleach, vinegar, acidic cleaners), abrasive scrubbing tools, and using the tub during cure time can all reduce lifespan. We provide aftercare instructions. Follow them, and your refinish will last the full 10–15 years.
Can I refinish again after 15 years?
Yes. If your refinished tub starts showing wear after 10–15 years, we can sand, prep, and re-refinish. Cost is the same as the original refinish. You can cycle through multiple refinishes for the life of the original tub, all at a fraction of replacement cost.
Process & Timeline
How long does the refinishing process take?
We're on-site for 4–6 hours on a single day. Your tub is light-use ready (cool water rinses) in 24 hours. Safe for normal showers and bathing in 48 hours. Full cure (maximum hardness) takes 30 days, but it's usable long before that.
Can I use my bathtub during cure time?
24–36 hours: Cool water rinses only. 48 hours+: You can shower and bathe normally. Avoid soaking tubs and extended hot baths for 7 days. By day 30, the coating has fully cured and can handle any use.
What's the smell like? Is it toxic?
Professional refinishing coatings have a chemical odor during application and cure. It's not pleasant, but it's not toxic at safe ventilation levels. We use industrial ventilation to minimize odor. We recommend opening windows and staying out of the bathroom during application. The smell mostly dissipates within 24 hours. Standard bathroom ventilation is sufficient after we leave.
You don't need to leave your home or take special precautions—just ventilate.
Do I need to stay out of my home during refinishing?
No. You can stay home. The bathroom door will be closed and the work is contained. You might notice odor, but it's not hazardous at normal ventilation levels. We do recommend staying out of the bathroom itself while we're spraying (for your comfort and to avoid dust).
What happens if it rains during cure time?
Rain doesn't affect cure. The coating cures from the inside out. External humidity can slow cure slightly, but it won't ruin anything. We monitor weather and adjust cure timelines if needed.
Materials & Preparation
What tub materials can be refinished?
Porcelain, cast iron, fiberglass, acrylic, steel, clawfoot, soaking tubs, and most specialty tubs. If it has a factory coating (not a liner), we can almost certainly refinish it. Call with a description or photo and we'll tell you if it's a good candidate.
Can you refinish a tub with a liner underneath?
If you have a plastic liner glued to the original tub, refinishing the original tub isn't possible without removing the liner first. Liner removal is expensive and destructive. If this is your situation, let's discuss your options.
Can you fix chips and cracks?
Yes. Chip and crack repair is part of our standard process. Small chips and fine cracks are filled with a bonding compound, sanded smooth, and sealed. Larger structural cracks (more than 1/4 inch wide or very deep) may indicate a more serious issue. We'll assess and let you know if the tub is repairable or if replacement is needed.
Can you remove stains?
Many stains are removed during our deep cleaning and prep phase. Ring stains, rust stains, mineral deposits—our alkaline cleaners and acid etch usually eliminate these. Some stubborn stains may require specialized treatment. Bring photos and we can advise.
What if my tub has rust spots?
Rust spots (usually under a chip or crack in the coating) are treated before refinishing. We clean the rust, may use a rust converter, fill the area, and refinish. The new coating seals the spot, preventing future rust.
Can you change the color of my tub?
Yes. White is standard (and most common). We can refinish in custom colors: blue, pink, beige, gray, etc. Custom colors may add $50–$150 to the cost depending on availability. Bring a color sample or describe what you want and we'll source the coating.
Can you add anti-slip texture?
Yes. We apply anti-slip coating to the tub floor or entire tub surface during topcoat phase. Creates a gritty, non-skid surface similar to non-skid deck paint. Anti-slip adds $100–$150 to the cost. Great for families with young children or elderly users.
Pricing & Warranty
What's the actual price for bathtub refinishing?
Standard bathtubs (5-foot porcelain, fiberglass, or acrylic) typically run $450–$650. Specialty tubs (claw-foot, jetted, 6-foot soaking tubs), tubs requiring significant repair, and custom colors may be more. Every quote is free, in writing, and honest. Call (720) 295-0513 and we'll give you a price right on the phone if the tub is standard.
Do you do tub-and-tile combos?
Yes. Bathtub plus surrounding tile surround is one of our most common jobs. Typical combo range is $750–$1,100. We sand and refinish both surfaces with the same multi-step process. Call for a specific quote based on your tub size and tile area.
Is your pricing transparent? Are there hidden fees?
Our pricing is fully transparent. Every quote includes what we'll do, what it costs, and what's included (prep, primer, topcoat, warranty). We don't add surprise fees on the day of service. If we discover unexpected issues during inspection (severe structural damage), we call you with an updated quote before proceeding.
What does your warranty cover?
Our written warranty covers coating failure (peeling, chipping, cracking) due to our workmanship for 1 year. It covers materials for the duration of the refinish lifespan (10–15 years under normal use and maintenance). It does not cover damage from abuse, improper maintenance, or lack of ventilation. We provide written aftercare instructions with every job.
Do you offer financing or payment plans?
We accept cash, check, and credit cards. For larger commercial projects, we can discuss payment terms. Call to discuss options.
Do you offer discounts for multiple tubs or jobs?
Yes. Volume pricing is available for property managers, commercial clients, and homeowners doing multiple rooms. Call for a quote.
Refinishing vs. Replacement
Why would I refinish instead of replacing?
Cost (1/10th), speed (one day vs. 1-2 weeks), and minimal disruption. Replacing requires demolition, plumbing work, drywall repair, tile work, permits, inspections. Refinishing is in and out in a day. Even if you plan to replace eventually, refinishing buys you 10–15 years at low cost.
When should I replace instead of refinish?
If the tub has severe structural damage (cracked or corroded through), plumbing issues, or a non-repairable liner, replacement may be the only option. We'll tell you straight. If the tub is fundamentally sound, refinishing is almost always the smarter choice financially.
How does a refinished tub compare to a new tub?
Visually, a professionally refinished tub looks identical to a new one—smooth, glossy, bright. Functionally, it's the same. The lifespan is similar (10–15 years for both a new acrylic tub and a refinished one). The difference is cost: $500 vs. $3,000+.
Can I refinish, then replace later if needed?
Absolutely. Refinishing doesn't permanently alter the tub. If you refinish now and decide to replace in 15 years, you can do that. You've bought 15 years of use for $500 instead of $3,000.
DIY vs. Professional
Why shouldn't I just use a DIY refinishing kit?
DIY kits use thin, low-grade acrylic paint applied over inadequate prep. They fail predictably within 6–12 months due to poor adhesion, inadequate ventilation, and low coating quality. Professional refinishing uses commercial-grade primers and topcoats (3-4x thicker), multi-step prep, and controlled ventilation. It lasts 10–15 years. See our "DIY vs. Professional" section for detailed comparison.
Aren't DIY kits cheaper?
A DIY kit costs $50–$150. When it fails after 6 months, you're out that money and stuck with a worse tub. Professional refinishing costs $450–$650 and lasts 10–15 years. Over time, professional is dramatically cheaper.
Service & Scheduling
How do I schedule an appointment?
Call (720) 295-0513 for a free phone estimate and to schedule. We typically have availability within 2–4 weeks. Emergency scheduling may be available—ask.
Do you service areas outside Denver?
Yes. We service the Denver metro area and surrounding Colorado. Remote areas may have a travel fee. Call with your zip code and we'll let you know.
Are you licensed, insured, and bonded?
Yes. We're licensed in Colorado, fully insured, and bonded. BBB A+ accredited. You're protected in case of any issues.
Do you use subcontractors?
No. Fresh Look Refinishing handles all work in-house. No third-party contractors. You work directly with us from estimate through completion and warranty.
What should I do to prepare for refinishing day?
Remove items from the bathroom (bath mats, toilet brush, etc.). We'll handle the rest. You don't need to clean anything—we do a deep clean as part of the process. Just clear the space and make sure we have access to the tub.
Safety & Assurance
Is bathtub refinishing safe for my family?
Yes. The process uses industry-standard coatings applied by professionals with proper ventilation. After 24 hours, it's completely safe. We provide ventilation during application and recommend opening windows. The coating is non-toxic once cured.
Are there VOC (fume) concerns?
Refinishing coatings have VOCs (volatile organic compounds) during application and initial cure. This is why we use industrial ventilation and recommend you ventilate after we leave. After the smell dissipates (24 hours), there are no VOC concerns. The finished coating is stable and non-off-gassing.
Is the refinish food-safe for sinks?
Refinishing coatings are not food-contact safe. If you're refinishing a kitchen sink, it's cosmetic only. Do not prepare food directly on the refinished surface. This isn't common—most kitchen sink refinishes are done for appearance, with food prep happening in separate areas.
What if something goes wrong?
We're licensed, insured, and bonded. If our work causes damage to your home or the refinish fails due to our workmanship, we're covered and responsible. We also provide a written warranty with every job. We don't leave until you're satisfied.
